K-State announced Monday that ground has been broken on new practice and game fields for K-State women’s soccer. The first phase of the project will cost $2.1 million and will be completely funded by department-generated revenue. The fields will be on the former site of football practice fields just south of Tointon Family Stadium. Two grass fields with a Bermuda surface plus new irrigation and drainage system will be put in and the first phase is expected to be completed by July. Manhattan High’s AJ Epperson signed a letter of intent to play college baseball with Independence Community College Tuesday at MHS. The Tribe infielder has battled back from two knee surgeries during his career to get back on the field. He missed parts of his sophomore and junior seasons but has come back as one of four seniors on the 2015 varsity team. Epperson also considered Barton County Community College and Cloud County Community College but chose Independence in part because they were the first school to show interest. – Riley County softball beat Concordia 2-0 in the only game finished between the two before rain wiped out game two. Jordan Ummel got the win on the mound by shutting out Concordia while striking out 13. Taylor Prockish led the offense with a single and a triple. The Falcons are now 4-5 and play Abilene and Rock Creek this week. – Manhattan High soccer’s game at Great Bend was postponed until May 11th.

Manhattan High’s Savannah Roberts is the latest Indian to sign to play college basketball. She signed today with the University of Central Missouri. Roberts averaged six points and five rebounds per game this season while helping lead the Indians back to a third state tournament appearance in the last four years. She also made the all-defensive team in the Centennial League. Roberts’ cousin played at Central Missouri and helped get her connected with the coaching staff.
