The Kansas City Royals started their Sunday with another aggressive move ahead of Monday’s trade deadline. The club acquired outfielder Melky Cabrera from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for two minor league prospects.
Cabrera, who was a member of the Royals in 2011, is batting .295 this season with 13 home runs and 56 RBI. Jeffery Flanagan of MLB.com reports the team will use him primarily in right field.
KC had already established itself as a buyer when it traded for three pitchers from the San Diego Padres last week. The club also reportedly had discussions with several teams about starting pitching. MLB’s non-waiver trade deadline is Monday at 3 p.m. CT.
A few hours after the Cabrera addition was announced, KC completed yet another comeback victory, 5-3 over the Red Sox. Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon each collected two-RBI extra base hits in the eighth inning to help the team win its third straight series.
In other AL Central action, the White Sox claimed a 3-1 walk-off victory over the Indians, bringing KC within two games of the division lead.
The Royals will now head to Baltimore for a three-game set with the Orioles. Cabrera is expected to be with the team when Monday’s game begins at 6:05 p.m.
