The Manhattan Baptist Church will be taking a load of non-perishable supplies to the tornado victims in Moore, OK. They are needing items such as bottled water, personal hygiene items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and deodorant; baby things such as disposable diapers, wipes, and formula; Gator-Aid, juice boxes, blankets for both adults and children, as well as single serving food items like cereal bars, jerky, etc. No clothes are being accepted as they have more then they can distribute right now. They will be leaving Friday at 1:00. For more information and pick-up call 785-317-2407. Drop-off at the church at 510 Tuttle Street. Please call first to ensure someone is there.
As part of EMS week, RCEMS and local MMA fighters will be teaming up to spread the word on the efficiency and ease of hands-only CPR. They will be at the Manhattan Town Center on Saturday, May 25th, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, doing static displays of EMS equipment. EMS crews will be available to answer questions but, by far, the highlight of the event will be local professional MMA fighters teaching the public hands-only CPR. VFC and Titan Champ Joe “the Nose” Wilk, Bellator Lightweight Tournament winner Dave “the Caveman” Rickels and VFC Lightweight Champ Jake “the Librarian” Lindsey are slated to attend. The fighters will be there from 11am to 1pm.
The Manhattan Municipal Band under the direction of Frank Tracz will present two Memorial Day Concerts. The morning concert will be held at Sunset Cemetery in conjunction with the American Legion Post 17 Memorial Day Program beginning at 9:30 am. The evening concert will be held at City Park’s Larry Norvell Band Shell at 7:30 pm. The concerts will consist of a variety of patriotic selections including “The Armed Forces Salute” honoring each branch of the United States Armed Forces. The evening concert will also feature vocalist John Richard singing “God Bless the USA”. The concerts are free and open to the public.
Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley-Manhattan will honor fallen veterans and their loved ones, again this year on Memorial Day. The Commemorative Service is open to the public and will begin at 11:00 am on, May 27th at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, (near the Manhattan Airport). This years’ program includes the First Infantry Division Band and Isis Shrine Highland Bagpipers among others. Immediately following the ceremony light refreshments will be provided at a hospitality suite in the honor guard room adjacent to the administrative building.
The members of Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Lee-Pierson Post 1786 invite the public to join them for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony. This will be held at Valley View cemetery (in front of the grain elevator on Highway 24 on the way to Wamego) at 11:30 am on Memorial Day, May 27th.
Readers of all ages will explore things underground and beneath the surface, and discover groundbreaking reads this summer with Manhattan Public Library’s “Dig Into Reading” program. Summer reading begins with a kickoff party at the library on Saturday, June 1st from 10:00 to 12:00 pm. This year’s party will be indoors, so no one will have to worry about hot,cold, or stormy weather. The 2013 Summer Reading Program is open to people of all ages, from babies to adults with programs, prize drawings, story hours, reading clubs, and more. Registration for “Dig Into Reading” begins on May 20th, and participation in all events and programs is free. Programs and reading logs will begin June 1st and last until July 31st. Tuttle Creek Lake Association will have its 19th Annual Youth Fishing Clinic on Friday, June 7th and Saturday, June 8th. This event is for youth ages 8-12. The goals of the Tuttle Creek Lake Association’s Youth Fishing Clinic are to teach both youths and adults about the techniques and delights of fishing and to motivate them to fish in the future. The event on Friday is from 6:30-9:00pm and is an educational session at which both youths and adults learn about casting, tying line to hook, fishing for different kinds of fish, and water safety. Youths and accompanying adults should arrive at 6:30 pm to finish enrollment. The session will begin promptly at 7:00pm and last about two hours. The Saturday session will be from 9:00am to noon at Jerry Dishman Lake, Anneberg Park, 3801 Anderson Avenue. Youths and accompanying adults should arrive by 9:15am. Clinic starts at 9:30am. The lake will have been stocked with 700 channel catfish, many weighing over two pounds. Enrolled youth will receive a free rod and reel to keep. After the fishing sessions, six awards will be made. After the award ceremony, youths will be given a free sack lunch.
Paxico Sacred Heart Parish will host a Chicken Dinner on Sunday, June 9th from 12:00 to 5:00 pm at the Parish Hall – Newbury, located 1 1/2 mile north of Paxico. Serving will be Buffet Style. Adults – $7.00; Ages 4 thru 12 – $3.50 and Ages 3 and Under – Free. Sunday Mass is at 10:30 with Bingo & Games at 12:30. There will also have a silent auction.
The Douglass Community Recreation Center will provide a free summer playground program for ages 11-16 this summer. The program will be held Monday-Friday, June 10th July 3rd, from 9:30-11:30 am at the Douglass Community Recreation Center, 900 Yuma Street. A variety of activities will take place during the program, both indoors and outdoors. While the program is free, prior registration is required. Applications are available at the Douglass Community Recreation Center and the Parks and Recreation Office, 1101 Fremont.
