Lunch with the League will be held on December 10th at 11:30am at the new location, the Tallgrass Taphouse Icebox Room, 320 Poyntz. Andy Hutchinson, Director of Head Start in USD 383 will speak on children in poverty in our area. He will include trends, what is being done to address the issue and what is needed.
Join everyone for the Holiday Dinner at the Senior Center on Friday, December 11th at 12:00 noon. The meal features ham, scalloped potatoes, broccoli salad, cornbread, and apple crisp. Only 100 tickets are available for the dinner. You will need to purchase your tickets in advance.
Dr. Bob Shannon, Superintendent of USD 383 Schools will speak: Providing Excellence With Less, in the auditorium at the Manhattan Public Library. Dr. Shannon speaks of the challenges of maintaining our schools with delining state funding. They will meet at 9:30 for coffee with the program beginning at 10am.
Fort Riley, in conjunction with VFW Post 1281 in Herington, will host a Wreaths Across America ceremony at the post cemetery on December 12th at 11:00 am. U. S. Army Garrison commander Col. Andrew Cole, Jr is this year’s guest speaker. He, along with other service representatives, will place ceremonial wreaths for each of the armed forces, the Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and POWs/MIAs. The Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery at Fort Riley-Manhattan will again participate in the annual Wreaths Across America Program with a ceremony on Saturday, December 12th at 11:00am.
Thundering Cats Big Band will have a Christmas Concert Benefit Performance for Peace Memorial Auditorium on Saturday, December 12th at 4:00 pm. Celebrate the holiday with great big band music of Christmas including Glenn Miller’s “Jingle Bells” and Duke Ellington’s setting of the Nutcracker Suite. Your donation at the Concert will support Friends of Peace Memorial Auditorium and the continuing renovation of this tribute to those who gave their lives in World War II. The concert will be at Peace Memorial Auditorium in the south section of City Hall.
The Friends of Peace Memorial Auditorium & Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia will present the Third Annual Holiday Music Spectacular on Tuesday, December 15th at 7:30 pm at Peace Memorial Auditorium. This is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated to restore the auditorium – a memorial to Riley County’s WWII veterans. The Coffee Shop Agronomy series takes place at Nelson’s Landing in Leonardville on Thursday, January 14th and is free to the public, with refreshments provided by the Riley County Farm Bureau Association. A MLK Jr Community Celebration will be held on Saturday, January 16th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Manhattan Fire Station Auditorium. Hear and see the creative work of the finalists from the MLK Jr Art and Writing contest. Share in the words and music of the civil rights movement. The speaker will be Phil S. Dixon, Kansas Humanities Council. Mr. Dixon was the co-founder of the Negro Baseball Museum and authored many books about baseball and was an expert on the Kansas City Monarchs.
