Photographer Dawoud Bey and University of Chicago associate curator and director of education Hamza Walker will discuss the power of art, its potential as a means of social engagement, and special aspects of the aesthetic research carried out by artists in a conversation at 7:00 pm Thursday, September 4th, in All Faiths Chapel at Kansas State University. A reception will precede the event at 5:30 pm at the university’s Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. Both events are free and open to the public.
Grandparents – and up to five of their grandchildren – visit the Zoo free on Sunday, September 7th from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm courtesy of ESB Financial. Tour the animal exhibits to see firsthand how keepers use enrichment to ensure the animal collection stays active and healthy. Enjoy family-freindly activities Zoo wide including a Zoo scavenger hunt, performance by Mr. Stinky Feet (a.k.a. Jim Cosgrove) and live animal encounters with the Zoo’s eduction ambassadors. Susie, the Zoo’s elderly chimpanzee female, celebrates 60 years in 2014! Join in wishing her a very special Happy Birthday throughout the day, including a birthday-cake-themed enrichment. Be sure to check out Susie’s birthday list to donate a special gift to the entire Sunset chimpanzee troop.
The Riley County Humane Society will host the annual Spay-ghetti and No Balls Dinner on Sun., Sept. 7, from 3 – 8 p.m. at Pottorf Hall in Cico Park.
The event will feature an all-you-can-eat Italian dinner sponsored by Olive Garden. Dinner will include spaghetti, meatballs, vegetarian meatballs, salad and bread sticks. Your all-you-can-eat plate ticket can be purchased at the door for $10, kids 10 and under for $5. Also at this year’s event will be a micro-chip, rabies vaccine and nail trimming clinic. Prices for the clinic are: micro-chip – $30, rabies vaccine $12 and nail trims $8.
“The Spay-ghetti and No Balls dinner is a fun opportunity for Riley County Humane Society and the community to come together to spread awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering your pets,” said Felicia Benedetto, RCHS Fundraising Coordinator. “One the biggest goals at RCHS is to reduce the amount of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens born each year, and this can be accomplished by ensuring every pet is spayed or neutered.”
All proceeds from the event will go directly toward RCHS’s initiative to help spay and neuter pets in and around Riley County, Kansas.
American Legion Riders from Posts in the greater Manhattan and Junction City area are invited to participate in this Remembrance Ride honoring the American Legion’s contribution to children of America’s fallen servicemembers after 9/11. Riders will start by participating at Fort Riley’s 9/11 ceremony then ride to Kansas State University for a complimentary lunch. Lunch is a thank you to the American Legion for its continued support of the American Legion Legacy Scholarship program which help fund college educations for the sons and daughters of military members who lost their lives while serving since 9/11. The dinner show will begin at 5:30pm and will be catered by Cox Brothers. Tickets for the dinner show are $65. Tickets for just the early show and no dinner are $30 and doors open at 6:30pm. Late show tickets are $30 and doors open at 9:30pm with the show starting at 10pm.

The Annual MHS Football BBQ Fundraiser will be held Friday, September 19th starting at 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm at Bishop Stadium. A Complete Meal includes a BBQ Pork Sandwich, Chips, Pickle, Cooke & Drink for $5.00. Each item can be purchased separately as well. Support MHS Football!
You are invited to attend the Sunday Worship Service at the Manhattan Christian Fellowship Church, 2740 Pillsbury Drive on September 21st at 10:00 am for National Back to Church Sunday 2014. After the service there will be a fellowship together at the Sirloin Stockade from 1:00 to 4:00. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Proceeds will go to the building fund.
