Remembrance Ceremony @ Sunset Cemetery

Bike & Build Cyclists @ Habitat Home

Manhattan Area Habitat for Humanity welcomes Bike & Build to Manhattan, as they bike across the country on their service-oriented cycling trip to raise money and awareness for the affordable housing cause.  Over 30 Bike & Build cyclists are expected that will work alongside 8 – 10 of the partner families as they work on the 26th Habitat Home at 406 1st Street in St. George and build a safe play area for the children.  This event will be held on Tuesday, June 21st from 10 am – 2 pm.  To learn more, visit www.bikeandbuild.org and http://mahfh.org/.  Free to the public, no registration required.

Book Discussion Group @ Senior Center

The Manhattan Book Discussion Group and the VIP (Visually Impaired Persons) Support Group will meet on Tuesday, June 21st, at the Riley County Senior Center.  The Book Group will meet at 1:00 pm.  The title of this month’s book is “The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics” by Daniel Brown.  The VIP meeting will follow from 2:00 – 3:00.  One of the members will lead a discussion on living with a visual impairment.  Please join as they share thoughts and ideas with each other.  Any questions, please contact Kathy at 539-1973.

Municipal Band Concert @ City Park

The Manhattan Municipal Band conducted by Dr. Frank Tracz will present its weekly concert Tuesday, June 21st at City Park’s Larry Norvell Band Shell at 7:30 pm.  The concert will include traditional Sousa marches as well as selections from the Broadway Musical “Les Miserable”.  Also featured will be medleys from the movies “Star Trek” and “James Bond”.  The weekly concerts are free and open to the public.

Top of the Town Tour @ Bluemont Hill

Thursday, June 23rd at 6:30 pm, Riley County Historical Museum Director Cheryl Collins will conduct a “Top of the Town” tour of Bluemont Hill.  Meet at the Bluemont Scenic Overlook parking lot off Bluemont Scenic Drive.  Admission is free and everyone is invited.  Bluemont Hill’s “Manhattan” letters are a scenic focal point of our community today.  Emigrants, adventurers, abolitionists and more are part of this tour of Bluemont Hill’s interesting history.  The Bluemont Scenic Overlook is part of City of Manhattan’s Goodnow Park.  The Overlook may be reached off of Bluemont Scenic Drive from Ehlers Road.  Ehlers Road may be reached by driving up Juliette Street, or from Tuttle Creek Boulevard.  If it is raining the evening of the tour it will be rescheduled for June 30th.

Amateur Radio @ Long's Park

Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society will be demonstrating Amateur Radio at Long’s Park from Saturday, June 25th until 1:00 pm Sunday.  This installation is part of the annual Field Day event staged every June by amateur radio operators throughout North America.  The public is invited to come and see what Amateur Radio is all about… and perhaps learn about a skill that will help them be prepared when disaster strikes.  Visitors to the site will have the chance to try their hand at making contacts with at a Get On the Air station.  Ham operators will be there to answer questions.

Homebuyer Readiness Workshop @ Manhattan Public Library

There will be a Homebuyer Readiness Workshop: Home Insurance on Tuesday, July 26th, 7:00 pm, at the Manhattan Public Library, Groesbeck Room.  They will be discussing the many options for Home Insurance coverage.  This is free and open to the public.

Municipal Band Concert @ City Park

The Manhattan Municipal Band under the direction of Dr. Frank Tracz will present its weekly concert Tuesday, June 28th at the City Park’s Larry Norvell Band Shell at 7:30 pm.  The concert will include Irving Berlin’s “Songs For America”, a “Dixieland Medley”, and “Sinatra In Concert” consisting of popular hits from Frank Sinatra.  Don Linn will be featured as trumpet soloist performing “Valdres March”.  The weekly concerts are free and open to the public.

USDA Commodities @ Flint Hills Breadbasket

USDA Commodities drive-thru distribution will be Wednesday, June 29th, from 3-4 pm at the Flint Hills Breadbasket.  This is available for all income eligible Riley County Residents.  All commodities are first come first serve.  Product available includes: Green Beans, Orange Juice, Canned Potatoes, Frozen Chicken Leg Qtrs., Raisins, Dried Pinto Beans, Canned Red Salmon, and Rice Cereal.

1st Annual Bike Show @ American Legion

The Independence Day 1st Annual Bike show will be held on Sunday, July 3rd from 4 – 9 pm at the American Legion, 114 McCall Road.  Bike registration begins at 4:00 pm with awards given for Best in Show; Best Metric; Best Paint; People’s Choice; Best Cruiser; and Best Paint.  All makes are welcome.  They will have a beer garden, food, music, hog raffle and fireworks.  Contact Pearce-Keller American Legion Post 17, 785-776-4556, lbachelor@cox.net for more information.
