‘Tis the Season of Juneteenth! @ Bird Runner Wildlife Refuge

‘Tis the Season of Juneteenth!  The public is invited to celebrate this landmark of freedom with a wildflower walk on the tall grass prairie!   The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 4th, 7:30 pm, at Bird Runner Wildlife Refuge, east side, 5 mile south of I-70, Exit 307.  Visitors should follow the gravel drive across the bridge and up to the Guest House and park along the drive.  Sturdy shoes & insect repellent are a must, as mosquitoes and ticks are bad this year!  Admission is free but reservations are requested, via 785-539-5592 or

Vacation Bible School @ Peace Lutheran Church

Welcome Home Ceremony @ Marshall Army Airfield

The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley extend invitations to any and all Vietnam veterans to attend a welcome-home ceremony on Wednesday, June 8th, during the division’s annual Victory Week (June 6-10). Chicken Dinner @ Paxico Hall

Paxico Sacred Heart Parish Chicken Dinner will be held on Sunday, June 12th, serving buffet style from 12:00 to 3:30 pm.  Mass will be at 10:30 am. Municipal Band Concert @ City Park

The Manhattan Municipal Band will present its weekly concert Tuesday, June 14th at City Park’s Larry Norvell Band Shell at 7:30 pm.  The concert will include traditional marches “Colonel Bogey” and “King Cotton” as well as “Light Cavalry Overture”. A concert highlight will be the combined performance of the Municipal Band and the 170+ students attending the KSU Summer Band Camp conducted by KSU Band Director Don Linn.  The combined groups will perform “Courage March” and “Shorewood Overture”.  Also featured will be xylophone soloist Dan Haddad, KSU graduate student, performing “Xylophonia”.  KSU percussionists Alex Wimmer and Jack Donovan will join Haddad performing “Serenade for a Picket Fence”.  The weekly concerts are free and open to the public.


Caregiver Training @ Geary County Senior Center

Respite care is temporary help provided that helps caregivers.  Respite workers or volunteers assist a child or adult with special needs so that the caregiver can “take a break.”  This temporary relief to a family caregiver can be a welcome solution.  The one-day REST course provides skills and tools to people who want to help caregivers.  This interactive training is for people who want to provide respite.  It is a highly detailed program that prepares people – family members, volunteers or job seekers – to care for people with health care needs and various diagnoses.  The course includes topics for caring for older adults diagnosed with a form of dementia, adults recovering from a stroke or an accident and children with developmental disabilities.  This training will be held on Thursday, June 16th from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Geary County Senior Center.  Register today by calling SHICK Coordinator, Marsha Rogers at 800-432-2703 or email her at

Juneteenth Celebration @ City Park
