Taylor Johnson led three players in double-figure kills with a career-high 13 as K-State volleyball outlasted Portland in five sets 24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 15-11 during the season opener in the UNLV Invitational at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas on Friday night. Lilla Porubek added 12 kills, and Chelsea Keating also put up a career-high with 11. Preseason co-Big 12 freshman of the year Katie Brand registered 50 assists in her debut as the Cats’ starting setter. Manhattan native and senior Tristan McCarty tied a career mark with 17 digs in her first start at libero. Brand led the K-State front line with five blocks.
K-State (1-0) will play two matches on Saturday in Las Vegas. First, they’ll face Cal State Fullerton at noon central time, with pregame at 11:30am on NewsRadio 1350 KMAN. The Cats will close the tournament against host UNLV at 9:00pm central, with pregame at 8:3o on KMAN.
