Chambers’ Buzzer-Beater Hooks Horns

Brittany Chambers’ back door layup as time ran out gave the No. 8 seed Kansas State Women’s Basketball team a thrilling 51-49 victory over No. 9 seed Texas Friday night in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament at American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Chambers who became the third player in the history of the program to score 2,000 points during this game scored 20 points, the last two coming as the buzzer sounded on a great pass from Mariah White and got the clutch layup which touched off a huge celebration by the Wildcats.

K-State used strong three-point shooting and stingy defense in the first half to race out to a 27-17 halftime lead. However Texas came out strong in the second half using a 10-3 run to cut the K-State advantage to 30-27. The Longhorns then pulled ahead 38-37 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game and it was a back and forth battle the rest of the way. K-State led 49-47 in the final minute before Imani McGee-Stafford tied the score setting up the winning play for the Wildcats.

Chambers was joined in double figures by Haley Texada with 19 points and Chantay Caron added 10. Chambers joins Kendra Wecker and Nicole Ohlde as the only Wildcat Women’s players to reach the 2,000-point milestone.

Kansas State (15-16) won’t have long to celebrate the triumph over Texas. On Saturday afternoon they’ll take the floor against top seed and defending National Champion Baylor, which defeated K-State this past Monday 90-68 in Waco behind 50 points by Brittney Griner.

K-State will tip off with #1 Baylor at 1:30pm on Saturday afternoon at American Airlines Center in Dallas in the Big 12 Touranment quarterfinals.  SportsRadio 1350 KMAN will join the game in progress after the Wildcat men’s contest at Oklahoma State.  The women’s game can be heard in its entirety at kstatesports.com.
