Previous Riley County Commission meetings have featured discussions about the possibility of dissolving the Eureka Valley drainage district, after it was recommended by County Counselor, Clancy Holeman.
Local Attorney, Joe Knopp assisted Holeman with this matter. He was present during Monday’s commission meeting, as a public hearing was held to possibly approve dissolving the district. He shared background on the specifics of the drainage issues that caused the district to be formed in the first place. He also mentioned the hydrology report was showing zeros at the end of the report and they didn’t want the 20 landowners in the area have to pay for it.
The commission did approve the resolution that would officially dissolve the district.

Pasture burning has been taking place throughout the county for the past couple weeks. Fire Chief, Pat Collins visited the commission during the meeting’s press conference to speak about this topic.
He mentioned his crews responded to around 14 different fires that needed assistance to extinguish them. Only a couple of those fires turned out to be threatening to nearby structures.
So far for the burning season, Collins reported there have been 123 controlled burns called in. He also reminded people to avoid pasture burning when the wind speeds are over 20 miles per hour.
