SALINA, Kan. (AP) Two of the leading Republican groups in Kansas are condemning a Saline County commissioner for using a racial slur in a public meeting.
The Kansas Republican Party and the Kansas Young Republicans issued statements Thursday to the Salina Journal criticizing Commissioner Jim Gile.
During a hearing last week, Gile used a variant of a racial slur to imply a job done sloppily or hastily. When asked what he meant, Gile replied: “Afro-Americanized.”
The two GOP groups said Gile’s comments were offensive and did not reflect the party’s beliefs. They also condemned the commission for not objecting to the comments.
On Wednesday, Rep. J.R. Claeys, a Republican from Salina, said Gile should resign.
Gile apologized for the remarks but has said he does not intend to resign from the commission.
