The Olympic Club in San Francisco ate up and spit out some of the best players in the world on day one of the US Open. But, former K-State standout Aaron Watkins survived major trouble and is right in the mix at golf’s national championship. Watkins, the first Wildcat to play in the US Open in a quarter century, carded a 2-over-par 72 on Thursday. Michael Thompson leads the field at 4-under-par, but Watkins is just three shots back of a group at 1-under that includes Tiger Woods.
