Fort Riley will host a 9/11 commemoration ceremony at the Global War on Terrorism monument between Cavalry Parade Field and the Cavalry Museum at 10 a.m. Friday.
Soldiers, families, friends of Fort Riley and family members of soldiers killed in action in support of the Global War on Terrorism will gather for the ceremony.
The ceremony serves to honor and remember those killed Sept. 11, 2001, and to recognize the bravery and heroism of those who answered the nation’s call defending America’s freedom in the aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon 14 years ago.
The monument is a small replica of the Twin Towers on a pentagon-shaped base. It bears the names of Fort Riley soldiers who have given their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Maj. Gen. Wayne W. Grigsby Jr., 1st Infantry Division commanding general, is scheduled to be the event’s speaker. The ceremony is open to the public; however, those without a Department of Defense ID card need to arrive early at the Henry Gate visitor center to get a pass to the installation.
