K-State accepts bid to play Oregon in Tostitos Fiesta Bowl

What was speculated almost immediately after Kansas State closed out Texas to wrap up the Big 12 Championship on Saturday night became official Sunday evening when it was announced that the Wildcats will face the Oregon Ducks in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The game will be played on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The six-year old venue is home to the National Football League’s Arizona Cardinals.

K-State will be playing in its second BCS Bowl and third Fiesta Bowl The Wildcats defeated Syracuse 35-18 in the 1997 game when it was still under the Bowl Alliance moniker. In January, 2004 following the 2003 season, K-State made a furious comeback before falling short against Ohio State 35-28. Both of those Fiesta Bowls were played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe. The Wildcats and the Ducks have never met on the gridiron and a home and home series between the two schools which was supposed to be played over the course of the last two seasons was cancelled in early 2011.

With their 42-24 victory over Texas Saturday night, K-State clinched its second Big 12 Championship and third conference title in the 117-year history of the Football program.
