Officers with the Riley County Police Department responded to a welfare check in the 900 block of N. 3rd Street in Manhattan on April 5, 2015 at approximately 8:50 PM. Social Media saw several posts by unknown or anonymous users with inaccurate information about the situation stating that this incident was possibly related to a hostage situation or a suspect attempting to harm others. These claims were not true.
Officers found no violation of criminal law and confirmed last night with several phone interviews that the public was not in danger. As no crime was committed there were no arrests made and no citations issued. No injuries were associated with this call for service.
The Riley County Police Department responds to welfare checks as a matter of routine. These types of calls range from checking in on elderly neighbors to assisting overly intoxicated patrons of local bars or house parties.

Updated 6:30 a.m. Monday:
A report came in Sunday night in of an unknown subject wielding a knife who was the target of a welfare check by the Riley County Police near the 900 block of North 3rd Street. This (Monday) morning’s RCPD incident report lists the incident as occurring shortly before nine p.m. Sunday night and as a suicide.
RCPD public information officer Matt Droge told KMAN shortly after the incident was called in there was no danger to the public.
