Funds have not been allocated and no plans have been officially approved, but discussions regarding the possibility of building a new shooting range and training facility for the Riley County Police Department continue to move forward. During Monday’s county commission meeting, Planning/Special Projects Director, Monty Wedel and RCPD Director, Brad Schoen requested the commission approve proceeding with scheduling a neighborhood meeting on the matter.
Wedel and Schoen shared the powerpoint they have prepared for the neighborhood meeting. It includes background information, maps and additional details regarding the current plans. The purpose is to inform the public of the current project plans and gain extra input on the concept.
A few additions have been included since the previous time the range was discussed with county commissioners. Schoen said the updated plans include rubber bullet traps to catch bullet debris, a filtration system to ensure the bullets do not enter the runoff ground water, overhead safety baffles and ballistic side walls.
The way the plans are currently designed, the project would be completed in three phases. Wedel reminded the commission, the current range, located near the old quarry in the Zeandale area, is leased from a private land owner. That lease contract will expire on July 1, 2019.
The commission did unanimously approve to proceed with scheduling the meeting. A date and location have not yet been confirmed, but it is expected to be held in June or later.
