Jared Moore threw four and two-thirds innings of scoreless, two-hit relief as K-State pulled out a 3-2 victory over Omaha on Wednesday night at Tointon Family Stadium. Senior right hander Jake Doller started on the hill for the Wildcats, but walked three and gave up a run on two hits in three and one-third innings. Moore (1-0) gave up a single to the first batter he faced, but then retired the next 12 Mavericks. Gerardo Esquivel surrendered a run on four hits in the top of the ninth, but earned his first career save.
K-State got just enough offense against Omaha starter Steven Schoonover as they were aided by two costly errors. Shane Conlon broke thru for the Cats’ first hit off Schoonover (1-2) with a bunt single in the fourth, and advanced to second base on a throwing error. Tanner Witt and Blair DeBord then followed with back-to-back doubles to take a 2-1 lead over Omaha. Witt singled in the sixth inning, and advanced to second on a fielding error by the Mavericks’ left fielder. Two batters later, R.J. Santigate singled to left for a key unearned run to put K-State up 3-1.
Witt continues his hot streak with his 12th multi-hit effort, plus he scored two runs, and knocked in a run. Freshman outfielder Clayton Dalrymple also had two hits in his second start at K-State.
K-State will play a crucial Big 12 series this weekend against Texas Tech. First pitch on Friday night will be at 6:35pm at Tointon Family Stadium. Pregame from the K-State Sports Network starts at 6:00 on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN.
