In honor of Earth Day, which is on Wednesday, Sunset Zoo held their “Party for the Planet” event on Saturday. The rain may have caused a few adjustments to be made, but the day went on as scheduled for the most part.
A zoo-wide scavenger hunt was held during the day for children. Marketing and Development Officer, Ella Casey said some of the stops had to be moved under shelter. Several learning opportunities were available along the hunt.
A large inflatable globe was set up in the Nature Exploration Center. The globe took up most of the rotunda space. Casey said it is part of a traveling exhibit and the globe makes it’s way to several different locations throughout the state, especially around Earth Day.
The featured entertainer for the day was Richard Renner and his Recycle Cycle. Renner traveled around the zoo throughout the day with his pedal cart, which consisted of recycled goods.
Renner said he has been doing this for the past 20 years and he has been involved in theater and the performing arts for much longer.
At 2 p.m., Renner put on a performance in the Chautauqua pavilion. Other Party for the Planet activities included a children’s storytime and animal encounters.
