The first snow has fell in Riley County and several accidents were reported throughout the county on Thursday. For this reason, Riley County Police Department Director, Brad Schoen shared some winter weather travel tips during the county commission meeting that morning.
Schoen reminded local residents that we live in a transit community, which means many of the people are not used to driving in snow. Schoen encouraged people to be cautious and drive slow.
He also took the time to comment on four wheel drive. Some area residents seem to labor under the assumption that four wheel drive vehicles can stop quicker than two wheel drive vehicles. Schoen said this is not the case, and it still takes time to come to a complete stop.
One way to avoid minor accidents, according to Schoen, is to increase the driving distance from the car in front of you.

Riley County Health Department Director, Brenda Nickel requested reclassifying the Raising Riley Supervisor pay scale. Nickel stated the supervisor has taken on extra responsibilities since Nickel originally came to the county.
Human Resource Manager, Cindy Volanti stated she did see the reasoning behind the request, but it is not normal practice. Volanti expressed concern, as other department heads could see this exception and come before the board with similar pay increase requests.
However, the commission chose to unanimously approve the request.
