Michelle Price scored a career-high 25 points and her Wichita State teammates assisted by getting off to a fast start as the Shockers cruised to an easy 69-46 victory over the Kansas State Women’s Basketball team before an announced crowd of 3,914 Wednesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.
Coming off an 84-39 loss on Saturday at Texas-El Paso, the Wildcats were facing a deficit right away as the Shockers controlled the opening tipoff and five seconds into the game were on the board thanks to a layup by Alex Harden. Wichita State increased their early lead to 10-0 before Kelly Thompson finally got K-State into the scoring column with a three point basket with 17:13 left in the first half.
Wichita State then went on a 13-2 run to lead 23-5 with 10:36 left in the half as the Wildcats could not get anything going Offensively thanks to a combination of missed shots and turnovers. From there the Shockers were able to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the half with the Wildcats drawing no closer than 14 points as WSU led 37-19 at halftime.
It was much of the same story in the second half as every time K-State would mount a small scoring burst, Wichita State would immediately respond with a basket of its own. As the second half progressed, the Shockers were able to maintain their aggressiveness and lead by as many as 26 points before settling for the 23-point victory. Price was one of four Wichita State players in double figures as she was joined by Harden who had 15 points while Jamillah Bonner and Alie Decker had 10 apiece as the Shockers defeated K-State for the first time since December 18, 1999.
Freshman Leticia Romero was the lone Wildcat in double figures with 10 points while Bri Craig added eight points and Katya Leick had seven. Kansas State (2-2) will now have a week off before journeying to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island for a Thanksgiving Day contest against SMU in the Junkanoo Jam. On day two of the tournament the Wildcats will face either Tennessee or Virginia.
