Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder took his turn at the podium Monday as Big 12 Media Days opened in Dallas.
As is the case most of the time, the Hall of Fame coach did not offer much insight regarding his team. But he did answer several questions about the quarterback position, which may be the biggest hole on K-State’s roster.
“The situation is murkier now than it was in spring practice,” Snyder said. “We have four capable guys, and it will be important for us to pair them down as quickly as we can.”
The Wildcats entered the spring with three primary candidates at the position — Joe Hubener, Jesse Ertz and true freshman Alex Delton — but added JUCO transfer Jonathan Banks in June.
Snyder said Banks has made strides to enter the starting QB conversation.
“He’s certainly made progress in a short period of time,” Snyder said. “I don’t think anyone automatically possesses the ability to lead; it is something that has to be developed over a period of time, and he is improving with that.
“He’s an athletic young guy. We haven’t seen him in practice yet, but he will be in the competition.”
Snyder also expressed desire for the Big 12 to expand, despite league commissioner Bob Bowlsby commenting hours before that most league presidents are happy with ten teams.
“I can only speak for what I think is good for our university, but I have always favored a league with 12 teams, two divisions and a championship game,” he said.
Snyder’s next press conference will be at K-State’s media day next month. The Wildcats open their season Sept. 5 against South Dakota.
