The Football Writers’ Association of America (FWAA) named three K-State football players to preseason watch lists for two different awards on Thursday. Senior safety Ty Zimmerman is one of 81 players nationally and 12 from the Big 12 to be nominated for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which goes to the national defensive player of the year. Zimmerman will be a four-year starter at K-State, and led the Cats with five interceptions last season along with 50 tackles in 11 games.
The duo of BJ Finney and Cornelius Lucas have both been put on the watch list for the Outland Trophy. They join 75 players nationally and 10 from the Big 12 to be up for the award, which is given to the nation’s most outstanding interior lineman. Both Finney and Lucas were named first team all-Big 12 after last season as they started all 13 games. Finney is in his third year as a starter, and has also been nominated for the Rimington Award, which recognizes college football’s top center.
