For the second straight day, K-State senior Ty Zimmerman has been nominated for a national postseason award. This time it’s the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the best defensive back in college football. Zimmerman is the first Wildcat safety to be a candidate for the Thorpe Award since Jarrod Cooper in 2000. The native of Junction City had five interceptions last season, all in Big 12 play, to go with 50 tackles including three for loss. Nigel Malone was a semifinalist for the Thorpe in both 2011 and 2012.
Zimmerman was also named to the preseason watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Thursday.
