The MHS girls raced out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter over Hayden but couldn’t overcome 21 turnovers in a 56-43 loss. Hayden had built a ten point lead by halftime after going on a 21-4 run starting midway through the first quarter. The Wildcats then led by as many as 18 in the second half before Manhattan rallied to cut the deficit to 46-40 in the fourth quarter. The Manhattan High girls made quick work of Highland Park in a 65-33 win at the MHS gym Friday night. 13 Indians scored in the game and all 16 players who suited up saw the floor. Manhattan had an 18-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and then outscored the Scots 30-5 in the second and third quarters to put it away. The Shawnee Heights girls rallied from a 12 point second half deficit to take a 54-52 win from Manhattan High on Friday night. The Thunderbirds got 17 second half points from Danielle Poblarp including the game winning shot with 10 seconds left. Manhattan (12-3, 6-3) had two tries to tie the game on their final possession but came up empty. Poblarp ended the night with 23 points. Manhattan High came up just short of their first Mid America Classic title in a 51-48 loss to Olathe South in the championship game Saturday night. The Indians fell behind by as many as nine points in the second quarter but came storming back to go ahead 38-36 heading into the fourth quarter. Daniel Sams has some competition to become K-State’s starting quarterback in 2013. Iowa Western Community College quarterback Jake Waters chose K-State over Penn State today on the IWCC campus. Waters is considered by some to be the top junior college quarterback in the country and had offers from North Carolina State, Houston, Akron and Florida Atlantic as well as K-State and Penn State. He led Iowa Western to an undefeated season and an NJCAA national championship by knocking off Butler Community College 27-7 earlier this month.
