Currently the host of "KMAN's Morning News", Troy is a 30 year veteran of radio, nearly 20 in northern Colorado, where he served as the "Voice of the UNC Bears" while serving as the news and sports director for one of the oldest AM stations in the country. No stranger to Manhattan nor Kansas, Troy is an alum of K-State in broadcast journalism and grew up near Circleville. He began his broadcast career with KSDB-FM on campus while working part time at another radio station in town. He's married to the former Monica Haugsness of Seneca, who has patiently put up with his schedule for more than 25 years.

Six of the Kansas City Chiefs opponents for the 2023 season are playoff teams from this year. While the dates for each game won’t be set until later this spring, the Chiefs already know that they’ll have matchups against fellow AFC division winners in Cincinnati and Buffalo. Kansas City dropped road games to both this season but will get return visits from both in 2023. Kansas State’s three-game run of wins over Top 25 teams has landed them just outside the Top 10, as the Wildcats are ranked for the first time in five seasons. The Cats jumped all the way to number 11 after clipping both Texas and Baylor last week on the road. Despite the loss to K-State, the Longhorns are ranked just ahead of the Wildcats at number 10, while Kansas has climbed to number two, just behind Houston. Maize High quarterback Avery Johnson, who signed with Kansas State in the early period, has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Kansas. The high profile signal caller threw for 2,768 yards and 29 touchdowns with just three interceptions on 153-of-228 aim as a senior in addition to running for 817 yards and 15 scores on 98 carries. Kansas State receiver Malik Knowles used an Instagram post Thursday to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft. A senior with one year of eligibility remaining, he finished 2022 with 48 catches for 725 yards and two touchdowns. He had a year of eligibility remaining because of the COVID year granted by the NCAA. For his career, Knowles totaled 127 catches, 1,867 yards with 14 receiving touchdowns. He added 36 carries for 440 yards and four TD’s rushing. As a special teams performer, Knowles averaged 25.26 yards per kick return.

With Saturday’s Sugar Bowl loss to Alabama marking the end of the season for Kansas State, another player has placed his name in the transfer portal. 6-foot-4 senior defensive end Cartez Crook-Jones is seeking a school to transfer to for his final year of eligibility. The Grandview, MO, native appeared in only eight games in his time in Manhattan to date, registering four tackles. Six players from the Wildcat program have entered the portal since November.

The Kansas Shrine Bowl rosters for this summer’s game in Hays were released Sunday, with Manhattan’s Keenan Schartz and Jaxon Vikander plus Wamego’s Hayden Oviatt being selected. The Manhattan quarterback and linebacker were picked for a West team that will be coached by a staff that includes Indians head coach Joe Schartz as an assistant. Hays High coach Tony Crough will serve as that team’s head coach. The Manhattan High boys basketball team moved to 3-1 on the season with a 60-44 win over Hays last night, as Jack Wilson led three players in double figures with 20 points. Coach Benji George says his team’s defensive effort made the offense better. Aaron Newcomer scored 14, Collins Elumogo 12 in the win for the Indians. The Manhattan girls saw Hays hit nine three pointers en route to a 56-47 decision. Destiny Yates scored 16 and Avery Larson 15 for the Tribe, who fell to 1-3. With the start of the official window for players to announce their plans for transferring to other schools, three Kansas State players were among the hundreds that made statements Monday, officially ending their careers at the school. Junior quarterback Jaren Lewis saw action in four games during his tenure in Manhattan, including during a stretch in 2021 where starter Skyler Thompson was unavailable because of injury. Manhattan High’s opener in the Hays City Shootout Thursday evening will be an early season showdown between top 10 teams in 6A. The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association pre-season poll issued Tuesday placed the Indians at number 10 to open the season, with Olathe West number three. Kansas State took advantage of two Kansas mistakes in the first quarter, scoring 23 points and building a lead it would never give up on the way to a victory.
