Oklahoma 7, Coastal Carolina 3
BLACKSBURG, Va. — Matt Oberste’s two-run single in the fifth inning gave Oklahoma the lead for good, helping the Sooners rally for a 7-3 victory over Coastal Carolina in an NCAA Blacksburg regional game.
Oklahoma (41-19), the No. 2 seed, trailed 3-0 after the Chanticleers got two runs in the first and one in the second off pitcher Jonathan Gray.
But Gray, considered a top draft prospect, kept Coastal Carolina off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Gray (10-2) pitched a complete game, giving up three runs — two earned — and nine hits. He struck out 11 and walked one.
Max White went 4-for-5 with two RBIs to pace the Sooners, while Oberste went 2-for-5.
The Chanticleers (37-22) got two hits and an RBI from Colin Hering.
Oklahoma will play #4 seed UConn in a winners’ bracket game at 4:30pm central on Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg.
Miami 7, Oklahoma State 0
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Chris Diaz struck out 10 in seven shutout innings and Garrett Kennedy homered as No. 2 seed Miami cruised past Oklahoma State 7-0 in the first game of the Louisville regional Friday.
The Hurricanes (37-23) were without coach Jim Morris, who did not make the trip to Louisville due to pneumonia. He has been hospitalized in Durham, N.C., since Saturday. Assistant coach Gino DiMare led the team Friday.
Diaz made things pretty easy for DiMare as he pitched out of trouble a few times. The left-handed sophomore loaded the bases in the second and fifth innings, but escaped with inning-ending strikeouts.
Miami took an early lead on Kennedy’s solo homer in the bottom of the second, and a four-run fifth was too much for the Cowboys (39-18) to overcome.
Oklahoma State starter Jason Hursh gave up five runs — three earned — and seven hits in 4.1 innings.
The Cowboys must survive an elimination game on Saturday morning at 11:00am against Bowling Green in Louisville.
