Katya Leick scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Kansas State Women’s Basketball team to a come from behind 73-65 victory over Alaska-Anchorage in their second and final exhibition tune-up before an announced crowd of 3,924 Friday night at Bramlage Coliseum.
The Seawolves out of Division II got off to a fast start as they sprinted to a 16-5 lead in the opening minutes. Alaska-Anchorage eventually stretched that lead out to 25-9 before K-State went on a 24-12 run the rest of the half to cut the deficit to 37-33 at halftime.
For much of the second half both teams went back and forth. K-State grabbed its first lead of the night at 45-44 with 15:39 left in the game. The game was tied at 62-62 with 5:19 left when the Wildcats closed things out with an 11-3 run led by Leick and newcomer Leticia Romero from Spain who contributed 15 points to the effort. Brianna Craig was the third K-State player in double figures with 11 points. Jessica Madison led the Seawolves with 15 points and Kansas City native Kylie Burns making her return to her home state added 11.
Kansas State, coming off a semifinal appearance in last season’s Women’s National Invitation Tournament will open the 2013-14 season on Friday, November 8 at Bramlage against Tennessee State as part of a doubleheader with the Men’s team. Tipoff is set for 5:45 p.m.
