Authorities say a man found dead on a walking trail Thursday evening in Washington Marlatt Memorial Park near Top of the World in Manhattan was a suicide.

Kansas State University Police identified the man as Steven Shawgo of Manhattan. Shawgo is listed as the Buick GMC Parts Manager at Briggs Auto in Manhattan.

An employee in the body shop, who’d worked with Shawgo for over 20 years, told KMAN Friday afternoon co-workers there were shocked by the news of his passing.

KSU PD said in a news release Thursday night via Facebook it was notified of an unconscious man in that area and that when officers arrived, they found a deceased man on a walking trail in the park.

K-State Vice President for Communications and Marketing Jeff Morris told KMAN during Friday morning’s edition of In Focus, the land at Top of the World — including Washington Marlatt Memorial Park that hosts many of the trails in the area — is KSU-owned property.
