Riley County commissioners were updated Monday morning with new details on last week’s tire slashings that damaged 19 cars in the parking lot just outside the Commission Chambers in downtown Manhattan.
Riley County Police Department Lt. Luke Breault said the investigation is still ongoing, but progress is being made.
“The officer that is investigating that case does have leads,” Breault said. “We’re looking at several persons of interest, and when I say several, I mean under five.
“I would expect within the next few days the investigation will come to fruition or be finished in some fashion.”
Breault also updated commissioners on year-to-date crime statistics in the county.
He said violent crimes are up slightly this year in the county, but also noted that burglary crime is down to a five-year low.
“Part I crime is currently up, year-to-date, about five percent, and currently projecting that to up for the year at 3.8 percent,” he said. “Part I violent crime is also up about 4.6 percent and right now we’re sitting on a five-year high.
“The good news is, though, that burglary is down, and it’s down more significantly than Part I crime is up, so it’s down about 15 percent for the year, and that includes both structural and vehicle.”
