A Topeka City Councilman and his wife, both formerly from Manhattan, have been arrested following a child abuse investigation. Jonathan Schumm and his wife Allison grew up in Manhattan and didn’t become Highland Park residents until 2007.
The two were arrested Thursday on aggravated battery and abuse of a child charges and four counts of endangering a child. Bond has been set at 35-thousand dollars for Jonathan Schumm and 20-thousand dollars for Allison.
The couple received recognition in 2013 by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, receiving the “Angels in Adoption” award after being nominated by Senator Jerry Moran. Jonathan Schumm’s been an active board member with the adoption advocacy group Project Belong.
The couple has 16 children, with most of them adopted.
