A former army private who was stationed at Fort Riley pleaded guilty and was sentenced Tuesday to two years in federal prison for stealing his fellow soldiers’ identities. According to a statement from U.S. attorney Tom Beall, 24-year old Todd M. Newbrough will pay $23,400 in restitution.
Newbrough pleaded guilty to one county of aggravated identity theft. In his plea, Newbrough admitted he accessed personal information about soldiers in his unit at Fort Riley. The records he accessed included leave and earnings statements and other documents which contain information like social security numbers. Newbrough used this information to obtain credit cards and lines of credit in the names of soldiers.
Beall commended multiple agencies including the Riley County Police Department for their work on the case.
