Levi Smith is a student at K-State pursuing his graduate degree, and shortly before the election filing deadline of noon Wednesday, he indicated his plans to pursue a position as a Riley County Commissioner.
Smith moved here from Greensburg, and says he gained a lot of public service experience “at the most real level,” working on a FEMA community planning board in the wake of the tornado that destroyed the city in 2007.
Smith, who got his Bachelor’s at K-State, says he’s sticking around Manhattan as he completes his Master’s degree.
Smith says the big issues he’d like to address as county commissioner are the income gap between the lower and middle classes around Riley County, as well as the food insecurity problem among the lower class around Riley County.
Smith, who is a Democrat, is the only challenger for the 3rd District seat. Republican Ron Wells is the incumbent.
