An early-morning fire in Ogden kept area fire crews busy on Tuesday morning. Police reported a fire at a three-story apartment building in the 600 block of Walnut street which appears to have been started after a vehicle became engulfed in flames.
“We had about $80,000 worth of damage to the side of the building,” said Pat Collins, Riley County Emergency Management Director. Collins notes most of the damage is external, while two apartments did suffer some fire and smoke damage. Fifteen residents were taken to the Ogden Community Center where the American Red Cross had set up accommodations.
Fire crews from Ogden, Fort Riley, Hunters Island and Konza were called before a second alarm was triggered. Two trucks from the Manhattan Fire Department also responded, and Collins notes the MFD crews were “tuckered out” after battling a separate apartment fire on Monday afternoon in Manhattan. Collins says the state fire marshal is currently investigating the cause of the initial blaze.
