Several local youth to gather for volunteer efforts Sunday

By KMAN Staff on March 1, 2018 Local News, Manhattan, Top Story

Several local youth will be taking part in North America’s Youth Volunteer Corps Day on Sunday.

These YVC youth serve at volunteer projects throughout the year, but on YVC Day, they will be uniting with hundreds of other volunteers throughout the U.S. and Canada who will all serve in their local communities at the same time.

Founded in 1987, Youth Volunteer Corps is a national youth service organization with more than 30 local programs in communities like Manhattan. Since 1987, more than 300,000 youth have volunteered nearly five million hours with YVC, so this day of service will celebrate all that youth have accomplished through YVC.

“Every day youth are making a difference through YVC just like they have every year since 1987, and we’re looking forward to celebrating that ongoing impact on YVC Day,” said David Battey, president and founder of Youth Volunteer Corps, headquartered in Kansas City. “Even though we’ll be scattered throughout North America as we serve on our YVC Day projects, we’ll be united in the spirit of volunteerism.”

Volunteers will meet at the Manhattan Town Center Mall from 2-4 p.m. There will be a diversity workshop with information on the diversity found within Kansas. Building Bridges is the theme and guest speakers will include Richard Pitts with Wonder Workshop, Elaine Johannes with Thrive, former Manhattan Mayor and Ogden school teacher Usha Reddi, World War II veteran John Lindholm and RCPD Resource OfficerTyrone Townsend.

“Our youth are making such an impact throughout the year, so we’re excited to take the day to celebrate them on YVC Day,” said Paula Dover, YVC Program Coordinator. “We’re excited to unite with the other inspiring YVC Youth Volunteers who are also serving in their own communities on this day.”

Youth Volunteer Corps of Manhattan’s mission is to create volunteer opportunities to address community needs and to inspire youth for a lifetime commitment to service. The program offers volunteer projects for youth ages 11 to 18 on weekends, after school and during the summer. Hosted by the Flint Hills Volunteer Center, YVC of Manhattan is one of more than 30 affiliates of Youth Volunteer Corps, headquartered in Kansas City. For more information contact YVC at 785 776- 7787 or email yvcmhk@gmail.com.
