Sixty-eight of the top high school football players in Kansas will take the field on Saturday night in the Shrine Bowl including a number of area athletes. On the West squad will be Manhattan’s Jordan Nelson and Riley County’s Calvin Kenney. Wichita Heights coach Rick Wheeler is heading up the West, and he says Nelson is certainly a versatile athlete. Wheeler says Kenney can fly, and will be a big asset on defense.
Another wrinkle is the East squad’s offense under Centralia coach Larry Glatczak, the single wing, which makes every back a threat to run or pass. Glatczak says the kids have picked up the offense nicely. The West squad has to prepare to defend the single wing, and Wheeler says they don’t run across the offense very often in 6A football.
The Kansas Shrine Bowl kicks off on Saturday night at 7:00 from Lewis Field Stadium on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Coverage on KMAN begins at 6:45.
