    Riley County Commission Meeting Recap

    – Riley County Commissioners met for the second time in 2012 beginning their meeting with a reorganization.

    After serving as the Vice Chair in 2011, Commissioner Alvan Johnson, who is the county commissioner for Riley County District 2 is now the Commission chair.

    Johnson was elected in November of 2000 and is currently in his third term as a county commissioner in Riley County which expires in January of 2013.

    – Public Works Director Leon Hobson said that the work at Wildcat Creek Road should be completed this spring with grating, seeding, and striping left to do.

    Along with the completion of that project is the beginning of other work funded by the county sales tax including the West 40th Avenue bridge project, repairing a guard rail on two bridges at Winkler Mills Road, and the outfall structure into the Blue River for storm water drainage along Casement Road.

    – Director of the Riley County Historical Society Cheryl Collins presented information regarding an upcoming event.The Riley County Historical Society is set to hold its quarterly dinner meeting on Tuesday January 17th.

    The meeting will feature speaker Melissa Kirkwood who is the Development Director at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Kirkwood will speak on “Discovering the Center.”

    The event begins at 6:30pm at the Zeandale Church with the cost set at 13-dollars. Reservations must be made by calling 785-565-6490 by this Thursday.

    – Gregg Eyestone, Riley County Extension Horticulture Agent, advised those who have plants that watering is not necessary although leaves have been sprouting due moisture the area received in December and warm weather this winter.
