Election canvas and resolutions examined by Pottawatomie County Commissioners

Pottawatomie County had several city elections this past week, and county commissioners canvassed the April third election during their meeting Monday. County Clerk Nancy McCarter sums up the overall numbers in terms of turn-out, varying from three percent in Wamego to 55 percent in St. Mary’s.

Elected to Wamego City Commission position one was Victor Enns, with 63 votes to Rob Adams’ 15. Westmoreland elected three council members who were all unopposed–including Norbert Marek Jr., James Moore, and Jeff Overbey. Saint Mary’s elected two city commissioners including Francis Awerkamp and Joe Bryan. Olsburg’s three council members elected were Aric Cassel, Michael Krause, and Chip Helget.

It was a day of resolutions for Pottawatomie county commissioners, with one approved for condemnation of Crown “C”, which involves the sale barn. And Commission Chair Gary Yenzer talks about another resolution signed by commissioners Monday,  to replace a bridge on Flint Rock, that was damaged in the last flooding the county had.

Another resolution suggested by Big Lakes Development Center will be considered by commissioners–having to do with Governor Brownback’s KanCare proposal and its possible impact on Big Lakes.

A bid opening for Timber Creek Bank Stabilization was disappointing according to Yenzer, with no bids on the project, which was unexpected.

Pottawatomie County Appraiser Lois Schlegel plans to stay on top of problems with companies who apparently think they’re exempt from property tax requirements–with the most notable example being Uncopiers, Inc.–which has neglected to pay for several years.  Schlegel says there’s some confusion on the part of such companies.

Commissioner Stan Hartwich described the whole matter as “disgusting” , suggesting company officials were “playing dumb” on the matter.
