Intergovernmental leaders hear about NBAF, mental health task force

Kansas State University’s Vice President of Research Ron Trewyn has been making the rounds recently, with presentations for both Riley County Commissioners and intergovernmental leaders Monday. Trewyn was asked at the intergovernmental meeting about recent news out of Wichita, with Kansas Senate President Steve Morris saying a split between conservative Congressman Tim Huelskamp and Speaker of the House John Boehner could impact funding for the National Bio and Agri-defense Facility. Trewyn indicates he is disturbed by mis-information, stressing there’s been support all across the Congressional level. Trewyn also told the group of a successful open house at the Biosecurity Research Institute at Kansas State this past weekend.

A possible mental health task force for the area was examined again Monday by intergovernmental leaders. Riley County Commissioner Karen McCulloh, who also serves as the Chair of the Riley County Law Board which has been examining the matter, addressed the group, receiving comments from the Fort Riley and Pawnee Mental Health representatives at the meeting. McCulloh was pleased with the response, but indicates more work needs to be done.

The intergovernmental group is comprised of leaders from the city of Manhattan, Riley County, USD 383, and Fort Riley.
