LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) The Douglas County Commission has approved the use of an herbicide to fight an invasive plant in Lone Star Lake near Lawrence.
State biologist Richard Sanders told the commission Wednesday that the plant Eurasian watermilfoil can spread quickly and damage the health of the lake.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports the invasive plant now covers about 10 percent of the lake’s east arm and has been found in other sections. Sanders said the lake should be sprayed before the plant becomes more established.
It left alone, he says, the plant could create a huge surface canopy, making boating, fishing and swimming difficult. It could also reduce the number of native plants and lower the amount of oxygen in the water, which would kill fish.
