Quarterback Collin Klein already mentioned as a strong candidate for the Heisman Trophy turned in a Heisman-like performance Saturday night as K-State met up with new Big 12 member West Virginia.
Klein had a hand in all seven K-State touchdowns and set career bests for passing yards and touchdown passes in a single game as the third-ranked Wildcats blew away the 13th-ranked Mountaineers 55-14 before a stunned crowd of 60,101 at Mountaineer Field.
In addition to rushing for four touchdowns giving him a new number of 47 for his career, Klein threw a career-high three touchdown passes, two to Tyler Lockett and one to Chris Harper as K-State scored on its first eight possessions of the game. Klein completed 19 of 21 passes for 323 yards with the three scores and no interceptions and also rushed for 51 yards. Klein’s counterpart, West Virginia Quarterback Geno Smith considered by many a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy threw for just 143 yards and tossed his first two interceptions of the season after setting an FBS record by not being intercepted in his previous 272 pass attempts this season.
