Shane Southwell may have had one of the finest 20 second stretches for a Kansas State Men’s Basketball in recent memory on Saturday and Head Coach Bruce Weber along with his teammates will certainly be grateful. Southwell sank two critical free throws with 21 seconds left and then blocked a layup attempt in the final seconds by West Virginia’s Gary Browne as the 18th-ranked Wildcats ran their winning streak to six games with a thrilling 65-64 victory over the Mountaineers Saturday afternoon at WVU Coliseum.
Southwell shared the game-high total with reigning Big 12 Player of the Week Rodney McGruder as each scored 17 points while Angel Rodriguez and Jordan Henriquez each added nine points.
K-State held a 36-33 halftime lead despite having more than three times the fouls called against them as were whistled against West Virginia. The lopsided foul total was offset by excellent shooting from the field for the first half.
With the victory Kansas State (13-2, 2-0) is off to a 2-0 start in conference play for the first time since the 2007-2008 season. K-State also avenges a double-overtime loss to WVU, coached by former Wildcat head man Bob Huggins which occurred last season in Wichita. The two teams will meet again on February 18 at Bramlage Coliseum in a Big Monday showdown which will mark Huggins first trip back to Manhattan since his departure in 2007 after just one season.
K-State will hit the road once again on Wednesday night as they travel to Ft. Worth, Texas to take on another new Big 12 member in TCU. Tipoff will be at 8 p.m.
