It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but in the end the Kansas State Wildcats will take it. The 18th-ranked Wildcats had just enough to get out of Lloyd Noble Center on Saturday evening by escaping with a 52-50 victory over Oklahoma and completing a regular season sweep of the Sooners.
K-State led 28-23 at halftime and had an opportunity to break the game wide open when Oklahoma failed to score a single point over a 10 minute 41 second stretch that spanned the two halves. However the Wildcats had their own offensive struggles allowing OU to hang around. K-State’s second half lead was as much as eight points but in the final minutes the Sooners whittled it down to two points. Then with 5.6 seconds remaining Angel Rodriguez was fouled as he drove the lane and sank two free throws for two of his four points. Oklahoma had one last push down the court but their shot to win the game fell well short allowing K-State to win its second straight contest.
Will Spradling playing despite a broken nose and without a mask led the Wildcats with 12 points while Martavious Irving was the only other player in double figures with 10. Romero Osby led Oklahoma (14-6, 5-3) with a game high 13 points. Kansas State (17-4, 6-2) is now alone in second place in the Big 12 standings and trails league leader Kansas by one game. The Jayhawks had their 18-game winning streak and 33-game home winning streak snapped in an 85-80 loss to Oklahoma State earlier Saturday as the Cowboys won in Lawrence for the first time since 1989.
K-State will once again be on the road on Tuesday night when they travel to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech. Tipoff at United Spirit Arena is set for 7 p.m.
