MHS Basketball Sweeps Topeka West

By KMAN Staff on February 6, 2013 High School Sports, Manhattan High School

In a game with numerous ties and lead changes, Manhattan High had the last laugh against Topeka West, 59-54 in overtime on Tuesday night in the Capital City. The Indians would lead by six points in the final minute of the third quarter, but an 11-0 run led to a 46-41 Charger advantage with 2:15 to go. MHS closed regulation on a 7-2 burst, keyed by a pair of layups by post man Payton Stephens, including the tying bucket with 18 seconds left. The Tribe sealed the win in OT by knocking down nine of ten free throws, including six straight from Jacob Holloway. MHS (8-7, 4-4) was led by Holloway’s 20 points, which also included four three-pointers, and Stephens had 18 points. Topeka West (1-14, 0-8) was led by Mose Hugghis with 17 points.

The post tandem of Caroline Ballard and Darby Price combined for 42 points as the Manhattan High girls routed Topeka West 62-27. Ballard scored a career-high 22 points, and Price matched her career high with 20 as the Tribe jumped out to a 31-12 lead at halftime. The Tribe (12-3, 6-2) was without point guard Elayna Spilker for the 6th straight game due to injury, but did not miss a beat against the Chargers. Tulsa-bound Autura Campbell led Topeka West (2-12, 0-8) with 11 points.

Manhattan High basketball will host Shawnee Heights on Friday night. The doubleheader starts at 6:00pm, and SportsRadio 1350 has pregame at 5:45.
