The 2013-2014 USD 383 Teachers of the Year are Jessica Nelson from Northview Elementary School and Marie Green from Anthony Middle School.
Jessica Nelson is a special education teacher at Northview Elementary School. She received her BS degree in Elementary Education from Kansas State University in 2006 and her MS degree in Adaptive Special Education from Emporia State University in 2009. She is currently working on her Ed.D from Kansas State University in Special Education. Mrs. Nelson began her career with USD 383 in 2006. She states, “I believe you have to have passion to be an outstanding teacher I am excited every day to get out of bed and come teach. I also believe that you need a strong support system or a strong team.”
Marie Green is a 7th grade math teacher at Anthony Middle School. She received her degrees from Kansas State University – BA in secondary math in 1973 and MS in Curriculum & Instruction in 1987. Mrs. Green has been a teacher in USD 383 for 32 years. “I stress to my students that we must do the best with what we are given. I want my students to be challenged, to be inspired and to realize their full potential,” states Green. “It is truly rewarding when students share their ‘aha moments’ when they discover how math can be used.”
Each USD 383 school was asked to nominate a teacher to be their Teacher of the Year candidate. The Manhattan-Ogden NEA Master Teacher/Teacher of the Year committee reviewed all of the nominees and selected Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Green as our elementary and secondary candidates.
The award always comes early so the nominated teachers have time to prepare their packets for the State Teacher of the Year process.
