Mark Mangino is back in coaching, just over three years after being fired at Kansas, and will step into a familiar place with an old friend. Mangino, a Youngstown State alum and former assistant, has been hired as the assistant head coach and tight ends coach for the Penguins, where he will work for former K-State offensive lineman Eric Wolford. Mangino coached Wolford as a player with the Wildcats from 1991-93, and they were on Coach Snyder’s staff together in 1995 when Wolford was a graduate assistant.
Following his stint at K-State, Mangino spent three years at Oklahoma as an assistant under Bob Stoops before becoming the head coach at Kansas. Mangino led the Jayhawks to a 50-48 record in nine seasons, including 12 wins during the 2007 campaign and an Orange Bowl victory. He was named the consensus national coach of the year following that season. Mangino was fired following a 5-7 season in 2009, amid allegations of player abuse. He has been linked to several head and assistant coaching positions over the last few years, but by going to Youngstown State, takes his first job since his ouster from Kansas.
Wolford has built up the Penguin program during his three years as head coach from three wins in 2010, to six in 2011, to seven this past season. Youngstown State opened 2012 with a win at Pittsburgh, and finished 6th in the Missouri Valley Conference.
