Bolstered by a pair of multiple-run innings and the work of five pitchers scattering six hits the Texas Christian Baseball team defeated Kansas State 5-2 in he final game of a three-game Big 12 Conference series Sunday before a crowd of 1,580 at Tointon Family Stadium.
With the game scoreless going to the top of the third, the Horned Frogs plated three runs thanks to two run-scoring singles and and RBI ground out. K-State got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Mitch Meyer but TCU responded with another two runs in the top of the sixth with the big blow an RBI triple by Brett Johnson. Austin Fisher finished the scoring in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double that scored Jared King.
Justin Scharf picked up his first win of the season in relief of starter Andrew Mitchell. Three pitchers who followed him held the potent Bat Cat lineup hitless over the final three and a third innings. Blake McFadden (4-2) took the loss for K-State which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end.
Kansas State (31-14, 9-6) began the day tied for second place in the Big 12 standings with Baylor just one game behind first place Oklahoma. The Wildcats now head out on another long road trip which begins Tuesday night in Omaha against Creighton followed by a weekend visit to Austin for a series with Texas.
