Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 announced Wednesday that a handgun was found near the Manhattan High School West Campus on Tuesday evening. In an e-mail sent to Parents and Guardians of MHS West students, Principal Terry McCarty stressed three important points: The weapon was found on property adjacent to the school and not on school grounds, there have been no threats made against the school or its students and faculty and there is no additional danger to the public or the school as a result of the weapon’s discovery.
Below is the e-mail McCarty sent to Parents and Guardians late Wednesday afternoon:
MHS Parents and Guardians,
In the evening of Tuesday, April 30, the Riley County Police Department was alerted to a handgun that was found by a USD 383 custodian on the Sunset Cemetery side of the wall on the north side of the Manhattan High School West Campus property. RCPD is currently conducting a thorough investigation of the weapon. We are assisting RCPD in any way that we can. At this time, no other information is available to us.
Three important points to remember:
Weapon was found on property adjacent to MHSW – not on school property
No threats have been made
There is no increased danger to the public or to the school stemming from this found weapon
We are committed to making Manhattan High School a safe place for our students and staff. We thought it was important for you to know and we encourage you to talk with your student(s) about school safety issues.
If you have questions or information concerning this investigation, please contact RCPD Public Information Officer Matthew Droge at 537-2112 ext. 3048.
