White Sox Rally To Avoid Sweep By Royals

Jordan Danks’ solo home run in the top of the 11th inning helped the Chicago White Sox rally for a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the final game of a three-game series between the American League Central Division rivals Monday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

Kansas City carried a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning following eight strong innings by starting pitcher James Shields. However, the bullpen which has generally been a strength for the Royals so far this season was not able to hold onto the lead as closer Greg Holland blew his second save of the season, allowing four hits and the tying run to score on an infield single with two outs in the top of the ninth.

The two teams battled the next couple of innings before Danks who was thrown out at home plate in a rundown to end the White Sox ninth drilled his game-winning homer. Kelvin Herrera (2-3) took the loss after working two innings of relief. Jesse Crain (1-1) was the winning pitcher and Addison Reed picked up his 11th save of the season one day after blowing a save when the Royals struck for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Kansas City was down to its last strike.
