Students from the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine visited Sunset Zoo Wednesday to complete annual physicals on on a Colobus monkey troop.
The visit is part of a program that allows fourth-year veterinary students to gain hands-on training to care for a variety of zoo animals.
Dr. James W. Carpenter, Professor of Zoological Medicine, Dr. David Eshar, Assistant Professor of Zoological Medicine and their interns led the students during physicals.
The students observed the animals weight, overall appearance, administering vaccinations and obtaining blood samples. Through the physicals, the students were able to identify potential health issues before they created serious concerns.
The visit was the first veterinary procedure to occur at the zoo’s new James W. Carpenter Veterinary Clinic which opened June 1.
