The loss of Angel Rodriguez has left K-State’s point guard situation for 2013-14 up in the air. Rodriguez transferred to Miami this offseason, and K-State’s returning experience at the position left with him.

The most capable candidate to take over might be incoming Freshman Jevon Thomas, arguably K-State’s most heralded recruit of the 2013 class. As of right now Thomas wouldn’t be eligible until the end of the first semester at K-State next year. That would mean he couldn’t practice or play with the team until December 13th. K-State head coach Bruce Weber joined KMAN’s “The Game” on Tuesday, and says he hopes that will change.
“We’re in the process of continually communicating with the NCAA and we’re hoping that it will be earlier rather than later,” said Weber in regard to when Thomas will be eligible. “We’ve just got to continue to look at it and see what kind of communication our compliance department can have with the NCAA.”
Thomas has been enrolled at K-State since March, and Weber hopes that Thomas will have completed around 30 hours of courses in the near future.
“He’s worked at it pretty hard and he wants to play,” said Weber. “We just have to hope for the best with the NCAA.”
Regardless of when Thomas is deemed eligible to play with the Wildcats, Weber is confident in the options K-State has at the point guard position.
“You’ve got Will (Spradling) who’s played point and is an experienced, savvy young man,” said Weber. “Also Shane Southwell who’s in some ways a point-forward and one of our better passers. We’ve even worked with Shane bringing the ball up to give a little bit of a different look.”
Another contributor at point guard could be incoming freshman Nigel Johnson. Johnson was previously committed to George Washington before choosing K-State.
